Who is Batman?


We all know the masked guardian of the Gotham City who hunt the bad guys in the dark but who is he? Batman's real name is Bruce Wayne. Unlike every normal child, the childhood of Bruce was very rough.

His father Dr. Thomas Wayne and mother Martha Wayne were murdered in front of him and from that day onward he sworn vengeance against all the criminals.

Bruce Wayne is the masked identity of Batman who is super rich, a playboy, and philanthropist. He is the owner of the Wayne Enterprises, a multinational company.

Bruce doesn't have any special superpowers like Superman but he has will, techs and money. He trained himself physically and mentally to be stronger than a normal being. His is one of the finest detective and investigator. His combat technique a lot more enhanced.

When all of his mental and physical training combine with his wealth, then the combination is deadly. Batman is known for awesome techs and weaponry which becomes a reality because of his wealth.

He has some associates too like his butler Alfred, Commissioner Jim Gordon, a masked vigilante named Robin.

The way Batman operates makes him controversial, some people think that he is yet another masked vigilante but some people do understand that he is the hero they need, a silent Guardian - a watchful protector - a dark knight.

History of Batman Games


The first game was launched as Batman by Ocean Software in 1986. The Ocean Software released the game for multiple platforms and managed to receive many awards and great rating from critics.

There are multiple games which stars Batman while some of them feature Batman. 

Therefore, We go through them one by one. Lets see the Games starring Batman then Games featuring Batman.

GAMES STARRING BATMAN

1. Batman - This is the first ever game of Batman launched in 1986 by Ocean Software for multiple platform. Though it was the first game of Batman but the response from the players were quite positive. 

2. Batman: The Caped Crusader - The overwhelming response from the first game was a motivating factor for Ocean Software. Hence, they came up with another sequel of their first Batman game in the year 1988. The graphics were enhanced and Batman was made more comic accurate while adding some new features and platforms like MS-DOS and Apple II.

3. Batman: The Movie Game - The Ocean Software became widely famous for making film-licensed games that were loosely based on the story of the movie. The Ocean Software coded and released their third game in 1989 by the name Batman: The Movie Game which was based on the 1989 Batman movie.

4. Batman - In October 1990, PC Engine launched their Batman game which had very similar gameplay like the classic Pac-Man game in which Batman was in a maze and player had to collect items to move onto the next level.

5. Batman: Arcade - Famous game publisher Atari showed interest in the character by launching their first Batman game in 1990 which was horizontally scrolling and fighting game with enhanced features and graphics.

6. Batman: Return of the Joker - Japanese game publisher Sunsoft published this game in the year 1991 for several devices including Nintendo Game Boy, Sega Genesis and NES. The gameplay was inspired by the famous Contra games.

7. Batman Returns - In 1992, multiple developers and publishers made this game for multiple platforms respectively. Some of them are Amiga, Atari Lynx, Game Gear, Genesis and some more.
There are eight different version of this game loosely based on the 1992 Batman Movie.

8. Batman: The Animated Series - Based on the Animated Series of Batman, Konami released this game in year 1993 for Game Boy. Robin is also a playable character in this game for limited levels.
The game was playable for single player only.

9. The Adventures of Batman and Robin - Following the action and adventures of Batman and Robin in the animated series, Konami and Sega developed this game for their respective platforms in 1994. The game was launched for three major platforms including Sega Genesis, Super NES, and Sega CD. Two publishers namely JumpStart Games and Gryphon Software launched this game which slight improvement for Microsoft Windows in 1995 and 1996 respectively.

10. Batman Forever - Based on Mortal Combat's Engine, Acclaim Entertainment launched this game in 1995 for multiple platforms including Microsoft Windows, Game Gear, Game Boy, Genesis and Super NES. The graphics were enhanced and consistent from the previous game.
The gameplay was beat'em up style in which player had to knock out their opponent.

11. Batman Forever: The Arcade Game - Acclaim Entertainment launched this game as a slight improvement in 1996 with better and refined controls and graphics. The gameplay was similar to the old one i.e horizontal beat'em up style. This game supported more platforms like PlayStation and Sega Saturn.

12. Batman and Robin - Developed by Probe Entertainment and published by Acclaim Entertainment, WB Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics in 1998 for Sony's PlayStation and Game.com 

13. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker - Based on the animated film of the same name, this game was developed by Kemco and published by Ubisoft in the year 2000. The game was horizontal sidescrolling beat'em up style. The game supported Game Boy Color, Nintendo 64, and PlayStation.

14. Batman: Chaos in Gotham - In 2001, Ubisoft released this game for Game Boy Color based on the New Batman Adventures animated series.

15. Batman: Gotham City Racer - The racing game based on the New Batman Adventure animated series. Developed and released by Ubisoft for PlayStation in 2001.

16. Batman Vengeance - In the end of 2001, This game was developed and published by Ubisoft in conjunction with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics. It was a platform game with third person shooter elements based on the New Batman Adventures Series for Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, Windows and XBox.

17. Batman: Dark Tomorrow - The game was developed by HotGen and published by Kemco for Nintendo GameCube and XBox in 2003. Unlike other games, this game had a dedicated and exclusive storyline.

18. Batman: Justice Unbalanced and Batman: Toxic Chill - Both were Educational games published by The Learning Company in 2003 aimed at teaching problem solving and similar skills to 7-10 year olds. Both games had puzzles to help children in developing problem solving skills.
Both games supported MacOS and Windows.

19. Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu - The game introduced the new Batman universe character Sin Tzu into the game. The game was developed and published by Ubisoft in 2003 in conjunction with WB Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics. It was launched for Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2 and XBox.

20. The Batman - Based on the animated series of the same name, HotGen developed and Jakks Pacific published this game in 2004 for Handheld TV Games. The game had five episodes in total.

21. Batman Begins - In 2005, Eurocom developed and EA games published this game before the release date of the movie of the same name starring Christian Bale as Batman. The game was launched for multiple platforms including Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, and XBox.

22. Lego Batman: The Videogame - Developed by Traveller's Tales and published by WB Interactive Entertainment in 2008 for Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo Wii, Windows and XBox 360. The game followed the Lego Line of Batman action figures and his associated characters like Robin, Joker, etc.

23. Batman: Arkham Asylum - An action-adventure game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Eidos Interactive in 2009 for PlayStation 3, XBox 360, Windows and MacOS. 
The game features Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill and Arleen Sorkin as their role of Batman, Joker and Harley Quinn respectively.

24. Batman: The Brave and The Bold - WayForward Technologies developed this game while Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment published this game in 2010 for Nintendo DS and Wii. The game is inspired by a TV animated series of the same name.

25. Batman: Arkham City - After the release of Arkham Asylum in 2009, Rocksteady Studios came up with the sequel as Batman: Arkham City in 2011. With same set of Voice actors, the game was published by WB Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics. The game supported Wii U, Windows, XBox 360, PlayStation 3 and MacOS.

26. Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes - Traveller's Tales developed the sequel to the first Lego Batman game from 2008 in 2012 with voice acting for major characters. Troy Baker gave the voice for Batman. The game supported Wii, Wii U, Nintendo DS and 3DS, XBox 360, Windows, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

27. Batman: Arkham Origins - In 2013, WB Games Montreal developed the third game in the Arkham series of games after Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. It was published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. This game was not developed by Rocksteady Studios like the previous ones. This game is a prequel to both the previous games and it was launched for all major platforms including Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Windows and XBox 360.
A handheld version of the game was also launched as Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate.

28. Batman: Arcade - This game was also launched in 2013 by Raw Thrills and it was developed by Specular Interactive. The game was open world driving action game having 10 Batmobiles. The game supported Arcade machine only.

29. Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham - The sequel to the Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes was launched in 2014 by WB Interactive Entertainment and developed by Traveller's Tales. The game continued the story of its previous Lego Themed Batman game. Supported many devices including PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, XBox 360, XBox One, Windows, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

30. Batman: Arkham Knight - The legacy of the Arkham series was returned to Rocksteady Studios to develop this new Arkham game in 2015. WB Interactive Entertainment published the game in conjunction with DC Comics. The game was a sequel to the Batman: Arkham Origins.
Kevin Conroy gave the voice for Batman and Mark Hamill as Joker since the game had very good graphics and it was quite realistic. It was launched on limited platforms including PlayStation 4, XBox One, and Windows.

31. Batman: Arkham VR - Virtual Reality is the new way to interact with games, so developers were eager to try a Batman game based on VR. What could be better than the successful Arkham series? Rocksteady Studios, the creator of Arkham Games developed another VR based game in 2016 which was distributed by WB Interactive Entertainment. The game was launched for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR. 

32. Batman: Return to Arkham - A remastered version of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City was launched in the year 2016 developed by Rocksteady Studios and WB Montreal. It was published by WB Interactive Entertainment. The game was launched for PlayStation 4 and XBox One.

33. Batman: The Telltale Series - A five episode point and click graphic adventure game launched in 2016 by Telltale Games and distributed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics. The game had a fresh Story line with Troy Baker giving the voice of Batman. It was launched for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows, XBox One, XBox 360, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android.

34. Batman: The Enemy Within - This game is a sequel to the Batman: The Telltale Series launched in 2018 by Telltale Games. Distributed by WB Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics. The gameplay identical to the prequel. The supported platform are Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, PlayStation 4, XBox One, Nintendo Switch.

GAMES FEATURING BATMAN

1. The Revenge of Shinobi - It was a 16-bit Sega Genesis game launched in 1989 which features Batman as a Villain Boss. Though the inclusion was not authorized.

2. Justice League: Task Force - A competitive fighting game developed exclusively for Super NES and Sega Genesis. The game was produced by Sunsoft and distributed by Acclaim Entertainment in 1995. The Super NES version was developed by Blizzard Entertainment whereas the Sega Genesis version was developed by Condor Inc. The game features all major Justice League characters like Wonder Woman, Superman, Flash, Green Arrow including Batman.

3. Justice League: Injustice for All - Based on the Justice League animation series, Midway Games released this game in 2002 exclusively for Game Boy Advanced. The game features multiple levels and alternate characters.

4. Justice League: Chronicles - Like their previous game Justice League: Injustice for All, this game was also released by Midway Games for Game Boy Advanced in 2004. This game had three different levels which had Green Lantern and Flash for first, Batman and Hawkgirl for second, Superman and Wonder Woman in the last.

5. Justice League: Heroes - This video game was developed by Snowblind Studios in 2006 and it was distributed by WB Interactive Entertainment. Batman was a main character of the game. The game was launched for Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Xbox. A dedicated version was also launched by the name Justice League Heroes: The Flash for Game Boy Advanced. It had Flash as only the playable character.

6. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe - The crossover fighting video game between Mortal Kombat and DC Universe characters was developed and published by Midway Games in 2008. The game is full of action and adventure accompanied by the Batman as a playable character along with some other DC characters. The game was launched for PlayStation 3 and XBox 360.

7. DC Universe Online - A free to play action combat MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) set in the universe of DC Comics. The game was developed by Daybreak Game Company in 2011. They published the game in conjunction with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Players had the ability to play as the characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Lex Luther, Joker and more. The game supports PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows, XBox One.

8. Gotham City Impostors - Another online multiplayer game developed by Monolith Production in 2012. Later, the game was distributed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The gameplay was a first person shooter set in the Gotham City, and we see Batman in the opening cinematic. The game was launched for PlayStation 3, Windows, XBox 360.

9. Injustice: Gods Among Us - One of the most famous games when it comes to online fighting games is the Injustice: Gods Among Us. After the success of the Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe online game, NetherRealm Studios made this game in 2013 while WB Interactive Entertainment published the game. The game had a high end graphics with special moves to every unique character. The was launched for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Windows, XBox 360, Android and iOS.

10. The Lego Movie Videogame - Based on the movie of the same name, the game was developed by TT Fusion in 2014 and follows the plot of the animated Lego Movie. The game is a Lego-Themed action adventure game which also features Batman. The game was launched for many platforms including PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Windows, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, XBox 360, XBox One, MacOS, iOS. 

11. Infinite Crisis - Inspired by the comic series of the name, the game was developed by Turbine in 2015 and published by WB Interactive Entertainment. The gameplay a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) consisting DC Characters including Batman. The game was launched for Windows.

12. Lego Dimensions - Another Lego themed action adventure game featuring characters from various universes of Warner Bros. Batman is also a playable character in the game. The game was developed by Traveller's Tales in 2015 and published by WB Interactive Entertainment. 13. Injustice 2 - After the success of its predecessor, Injustice: Gods Among Us, the sequel was released in 2017 which was developed by NetherRealms Studios and published by WB Interactive Entertainment. The gameplay was similar though with enhanced controls and graphics. The game supported wide range of platforms including PlayStation 4, XBox One, Windows, Android and iOS.

14. Arena of Valor - This is a mobile game developed by TiMi Studios and published by Tencent Games for Android and iOS in 2017. The game is a MOBA i.e Multiplayer Online Battle Arena in which multiple players can play together online in a battle arena model. The graphics of the game was impressive with good amount of details to the characters. The game was launched with the licence of DC Comics characters.
